The Challenge

EK Kids has a total of 12 community programs spanning across cities in the East Kootenays that are operated by individual coordinators. Aside from the problem of overwhelming costs associated with developing 12 different websites, there was also a need for all websites to share some visual consistency in the user experience from region to region.

Further compounding these problems was the fact that while every site had to be unique, they all had to have the ability to “share” events, new releases and posts with the main portal site at www.EKKids.ca. Finally, there had to be a system in place that would give each website its own potent ranking potential in the search engines without looking like every community site was part of one site.

The Solution

• Extensive research & planning in choosing a flexible yet simple CMS system that could be used to administer each individual community site.

• Logo re-brand and update, integrated with a new custom web design that would offer consistency and scalability for each community site.

• Custom programming to allow automatic aggregation of all the unique events, posts and content from all the 12 community sites into the main portal site.

• Sub-domain URL schema that helps search engines identify and assign a “higher ranking” to each individual community site.

• Social integration into Facebook: “Publish to Facebook” functionality from within the website, new Facebook pages setup and configured, full day training clinic with all the communities program administrators.

Results

• Each community program administrator has access to their very own site, administration area and there are no restrictions to what content and media they can add.

• The main portal site cumulatively shows recent updates from all community sites in the events calendar, latest’s news and updates and also allows global search of all community sites from one page. This helps visitors find what they are looking for faster and improves overall search engine rankings.

• Each community now has a Facebook page that is attracting many new subscribers which continues to grow.
